What does the Alpha 0A18 fault code mean?

The 0A18 code belongs to Alpha's 0A fault-code family and tells you the boiler's PCB has detected an abrupt, unexpected temperature shift on either the flow sensor (measuring water leaving the heat exchanger) or the return sensor (measuring water coming back from your radiators). Rather than a gradual drift — which would trigger nearby codes like 0A15, 0A16, or 0A17 — 0A18 is specifically about a sudden jump or drop in the temperature difference (delta-T) between flow and return. When this happens the boiler limits burner output as a protective measure; once normal delta-T is restored it can resume operation. The fault is resettable, but it should always be investigated because repeated occurrences point to an underlying circulation or sensor problem.

  1. Reset the boiler DIY safe

    Locate the reset button on the Alpha boiler's control panel and press and hold it for approximately 5–10 seconds until the fault code clears and the boiler attempts to restart. You should hear the fan run up and the igniter click. Allow the boiler to complete a full heat-up cycle and monitor whether the code returns. Repeat the reset no more than two or three times — if the fault keeps coming back, further resets will not solve it.

A one-off reset that holds is fine — occasional faults can be caused by a momentary air pocket or pressure fluctuation. However, if the 0A18 code comes back within a day or two, repeated resetting is masking a real problem. Continuing to run the boiler without investigation risks further damage to the heat exchanger or pump, which are considerably more expensive to fix than a thermistor or a system bleed. Two or three resets is a sensible maximum before calling an engineer.
