What does the Alpha 0E33 fault code mean?

The 0E33 fault code (sometimes displayed simply as E33) on Alpha boilers indicates that the boiler's PCB has detected a problem with the return water temperature sensor (NTC thermistor). This sensor monitors the temperature of water flowing back into the boiler from the central heating circuit, and the PCB uses its readings to control burner operation safely. When the sensor circuit goes short-circuit or open-circuit, the boiler loses confidence in its temperature data and locks out to prevent unsafe operation. In some cases this code can also be triggered by an underlying electrical supply fault rather than a sensor fault itself, so the power supply is worth checking early in the diagnosis.
