The 3 fault code appears on 3 brands — Halstead, Johnson & Starley and Nibe — and it does not mean the same thing on each. Halstead 3

Fault code 3 appears on the digital display when the boiler has entered a lockout condition after failing to establish or maintain a flame during a firing attempt. As a safety measure, the boiler shuts itself down completely and will not attempt to restart until it is manually reset. This code sits within a group of lockout codes (1–4) on Halstead boilers, each pointing to a different stage of a failed start sequence. Code 3 specifically relates to an ignition failure — the boiler went through its start-up routine but could not confirm a stable flame. Because Halstead ceased manufacturing in 2012, any boiler displaying this fault is now well over a decade old, and sourcing replacement parts can be a challenge. If repeated resets are needed to keep the boiler running, the age and parts availability of the appliance should factor into the repair-versus-replace decision.

Johnson & Starley 3

Fault Code 3 on a Johnson & Starley warm air unit signals that the Air Pressure Switch (APS) has not detected the pressure differential it needs to allow the ignition sequence to begin. In the vast majority of cases, this points directly at the Combustion Air Fan (CAF) — either it has stopped working altogether, or it is running but not generating enough airflow to satisfy the APS threshold of around 0.48 mBar. When the boiler enters this fault state it shuts down safely and the LED display shows the number 3. On units fitted with the Intejan hot water circulator, both space heating and domestic hot water will be lost simultaneously, since both depend on the same combustion air fan.

Nibe 3

Fault code 3 on a Nibe heat pump indicates a problem with the BT3 sensor, which monitors the temperature of water flowing into the heat pump (the heating medium return/flow). The controller has detected either an open circuit or a short circuit on this sensor, meaning it cannot obtain a reliable temperature reading. As a safety measure, the system restricts or halts normal operation — including compressor activity during hot water loading — until the fault is resolved.
