Note that on certain Alpha E-Tec models, E2 can also indicate an overheat condition rather than a pure ignition failure — so if ignition components check out fine, overheating caused by low pressure or airlocked radiators may be the culprit. Baxi E2

The Baxi E2 fault code signals that the boiler has detected insufficient water circulation around the central heating system and has locked itself out as a precaution. This code is most commonly found on older and legacy Baxi models — including the Baxi Solo, Avanta, and Main Eco Compact ranges — and should not be confused with the E20 code that appears on newer Baxi boilers. Firebird E2

Under normal operation, water leaves the boiler hot, travels around your radiators or underfloor circuit losing heat, and returns cooler. When the return is warmer than the flow, something has disrupted that circulation pattern, and the boiler locks out as a safety measure. The fault is displayed alternately as 'e' and '2' on the boiler's display. Note: on newer Remeha models such as the Quinta Ace, fault codes follow a different alphanumeric format (e.g. E.02.XX) — always cross-reference with your specific model's manual.

Worcester Bosch E2

The E2 fault code on a Worcester Bosch boiler indicates that the central heating flow temperature NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) sensor has been detected as defective. In plain terms, the boiler's internal thermometer for measuring the temperature of water leaving the heat exchanger is either failing, has lost its connection, or is sending a reading the control board cannot interpret. Because accurate flow temperature data is essential for safe, efficient operation, the boiler shuts down rather than risk overheating. Some models display a more detailed sub-code alongside the E2: the most notable is E2 222, which points specifically to a short circuit condition in the flow temperature sensor circuit, usually requiring sensor replacement by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
