Ferroli F52

The F52 code is a blocking fault on Ferroli boilers, meaning the boiler has suspended operation but may recover once the underlying problem is resolved — unlike an 'A' series lockout code, which always needs a manual reset. Depending on your specific Ferroli model, F52 points to one of two issues: an internal controller (PCB) error, or a fault with the flow temperature sensor. On models such as the DOMIcondens HE 26 C, Optimax HE Plus 31 C, and Optimax HE Plus 38 C, F52 is documented as a controller internal error. On certain other model ranges it relates specifically to the flow sensor being damaged or mis-reading. Glow-worm F52

The F52 code on a Glow-Worm boiler signals that the boiler's PCB has detected a connection problem with the mass flow sensor — the component that monitors the volume of gas flowing into the burner before and during each ignition cycle. Because Glow-Worm has been part of the Vaillant Group since 2001 and the two brands share the same underlying technology, this code carries the same meaning across both ranges. It is worth knowing how F52 sits alongside its close relative F53: F52 points specifically to a wiring or connection fault at the sensor (the sensor isn't communicating properly), whereas F53 indicates the sensor itself is functioning incorrectly — for example because its filter cap is wet or blocked, or because gas line pressure is too low. When the PCB cannot receive a valid signal from the mass flow sensor it locks the boiler out as a precaution, preventing ignition from proceeding without confirmed gas-flow data.

Johnson & Starley F52

F52 on a Johnson & Starley unit reports a domestic hot water sensor fault: the temperature probe on the hot-water side — fitted to the models that produce it, such as WarmCair D/DW variants and Aquair heat interface units — has failed electrically or is reading implausibly. The controller steers hot-water production by that probe, so with it faulty the unit cannot regulate tap-water temperature safely: too cool is a nuisance, but unregulated-hot at the tap is a scald risk, so hot-water production is restricted or stopped while heating may continue. The repair is the standard sensor routine: confirm with a resistance check, replace probe or wiring as found.

Saunier Duval F.52

The F.52 code points to a problem with the central heating NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) temperature sensor — the thermistor that continuously monitors water temperature in your heating circuit. This small electronic component works by changing its electrical resistance in response to temperature: as the water heats up, resistance falls, sending a live signal to the boiler's PCB (Printed Circuit Board). When the PCB detects a reading that falls outside the expected range — or receives no signal at all — it locks out and displays F.52 to prevent unsafe operation. On a Saunier Duval display, two alternating numbers with a decimal point after the second number indicate an active fault. Note: Saunier Duval no longer actively trades in the UK (the brand is now part of the Vaillant Group), so sourcing parts may take longer than for more widely sold UK brands — factor this in when arranging a repair.

Vaillant F.52

The F.52 code appears on Vaillant ecoTEC boilers when the control board detects a problem with the mass flow sensor circuit. This sensor — sometimes called the Venturi sensor — sits behind the gas valve and works alongside the fan to measure the ratio of gas to air entering the burner. It feeds live data back to the PCB so the boiler can fine-tune combustion for efficiency and safety. F.52 specifically tells you the boiler has lost confidence in that signal: either the sensor is not electrically connected, its plug or socket is damaged or has worked loose, there is a break somewhere in the cable between sensor and PCB, or the sensor itself has failed. In rarer cases a faulty PCB or unexpectedly low gas supply pressure can produce the same code even when the sensor appears intact.
