Ferroli F53

The F53 code on a Ferroli boiler signals that the control board (PCB) has detected one or more of its internal operating parameters are incorrect, out of range, or corrupted. In essence, the boiler's brain has found something wrong with its own configuration data and is refusing to operate normally until the issue is resolved. F53 is an F-type blocking code — meaning it can theoretically clear once the underlying condition is resolved — but because it points directly at the PCB itself, spontaneous recovery is unlikely. Related PCB parameter codes on Ferroli boilers include A23, A24, A26, F15, F20, F21, F40, F47, F50, and F51; if you are seeing any of these alongside F53, they all fall under the same category of internal control board faults. This is a purely electronic fault: your gas supply, water pressure, and flue are not the cause.

Glow-worm F53

The F53 code appears on modern Glow-worm boilers that share the Vaillant ecoTEC platform — including the Energy, Ultimate, and Flexicom ranges — and signals a problem with the mass flow sensor (sometimes called the Venturi sensor). This small sensor sits just behind the gas valve, adjacent to the fan, and continuously monitors the rate of gas flowing into the burner as part of the boiler's combustion regulation system. When the sensor's readings fall outside acceptable limits — whether because the sensor itself has degraded, its filter is wet or clogged, gas pressure is too low, or there is a wiring or PCB issue — the boiler locks out and displays F53 as a safety precaution. Johnson & Starley F53

F53 on a Johnson & Starley unit is a flue temperature sensor lockout: the probe monitoring flue-gas temperature has either failed its electrical checks or reported a temperature beyond the permitted limit, and the unit has locked out. It is the harder-edged sibling of F07 — where F07 flags the sensor circuit faulty, F53 locks out on the flue-temperature channel outright, because excessive flue temperature is one of the earliest measurable signs of combustion trouble or a fouling heat exchanger. The engineer's job is therefore two-part: prove the sensor and its wiring electrically, and prove the combustion genuinely healthy with a flue-gas analyser, so a real thermal problem is never dismissed as a bad probe.

Saunier Duval F.53

The F.53 code appears when your Saunier Duval boiler attempts to light but cannot establish a stable flame during the ignition sequence. Rather than staying alight and building up to temperature, the burner either fails to catch properly or ignites briefly before cutting out, repeating this cycle until the boiler locks out and displays F.53. Both heating and hot water are lost until the fault is resolved. F.53 sits within a wider family of MFS (Mass Flow Sensor) related faults on Saunier Duval boilers — codes F.51 through F.56 all relate to how the boiler measures and manages gas and air flow. F.53 specifically points to flame stabilisation failure, most often because the venturi filter on the MFS sensor has become partially blocked, or because dynamic gas pressure at the burner is insufficient or erratic. Because this fault involves gas flow and combustion, most of the diagnosis and repair work must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Vaillant F.53

The Vaillant F.53 fault code indicates a problem with the boiler's mass flow sensor — a component mounted just behind the gas valve, connecting to the fan assembly on ecoTEC models. The fault is triggered when the boiler's control board detects that the sensor is returning incorrect or no readings. This can be because the sensor itself has failed, the small venturi filter cap beneath it is wet or blocked, or the incoming gas supply pressure has dropped too low for the sensor to register correctly. In most cases, F.53 will cause the boiler to lock out and stop firing entirely until the underlying problem is resolved.
