This usually points to one of three root causes: insufficient water in the system, a flow or return temperature sensor that is faulty or poorly positioned on the pipe, or a problem with the boiler's electronics. Until the underlying issue is sorted and the lockout is cleared, the boiler will not run.

Heatline F83

The F83 fault code appears when the boiler fires up but the flow and return NTC thermistors (temperature sensors) fail to register the expected rise in water temperature within the allotted time. In normal operation, the water leaving the boiler (flow) should be noticeably warmer than the water returning from the heating circuit (return). The F83 code on Ravenheat boilers signals that the appliance has detected either insufficient water in the system or a failure of water circulation — or both. In practice these two problems are closely linked: when system pressure is too low, or when the pump cannot move water around the circuit, the boiler's safety controls shut it down to prevent overheating. Left unaddressed, low water levels can cause heating surfaces to overheat dangerously, so this code should never simply be ignored. Note: Ravenheat Manufacturing Limited was dissolved in 2025, meaning spare parts are increasingly difficult to source — factor this into any repair-versus-replace decision.

Saunier Duval F.83

The F.83 code appears when the boiler's control board detects an abnormal difference between the flow and return water temperatures. In practice, this tells you the burner has fired but the water circulating through the heat exchanger isn't warming up at the rate the boiler expects — a classic sign of restricted or insufficient water flow. To protect against overheating or damage, the boiler locks out and stops the heating cycle until the underlying problem is resolved. Saunier Duval boilers share control architecture with other Vaillant Group products (including Vaillant and Glow-worm), so this code and its causes are broadly consistent across those brands. Note that Saunier Duval no longer trades in the UK, but many of these boilers remain in service and parts are generally still obtainable.

Vaillant F.83

The F.83 code on a Vaillant boiler indicates that after the burner has ignited, the flow and return pipe sensors have not detected the expected rise in water temperature. Vaillant's thermistors continuously compare the temperature of water leaving the boiler (flow) and returning from the heating circuit (return).
