L1 Boiler Fault Code: What It Means on Every Brand

L1 is an out-of-range flow temperature (overheat) lockout on Ideal and Keston boilers, and a safety lockout on the Grant Aerona³ heat pump. On the boilers it nearly always means poor circulation — sludge, air, or a failing pump — rather than a faulty sensor.

L1 brand by brand

Grant L1

The L1 fault code on the Grant Aerona³ heat pump indicates a safety lockout triggered by the system detecting a problem with the flow water temperature. Either the water temperature has climbed too high, or there is insufficient water movement through the system. When this happens, the Aerona³ shuts itself down to prevent damage to the heat exchanger and internal components. On the controller, you will see the L1 code on the LCD display alongside a warning icon, and the red LED on the on/off switch will flash. A corresponding two-digit code will also appear on the Terminal PCB LED display on the outdoor unit itself.

Ideal L1

The L1 fault code on an Ideal boiler indicates that the boiler has detected an out-of-range flow temperature and has locked out as a safety measure. Inside the boiler, thermistors on the flow and return pipes constantly report water temperatures back to the PCB. When a reading falls outside safe operating limits — whether the water is getting dangerously hot or circulation is too poor for accurate monitoring — the boiler shuts itself down and displays L1. Low system pressure can contribute by restricting flow and causing temperatures to spike, but the primary trigger is always a temperature reading the PCB considers unsafe.

Keston L1

The L1 fault code on a Keston boiler indicates that the boiler has detected either an excessively high flow temperature or insufficient water circulation through the system. When either condition is sensed, the boiler enters a safety lockout and stops operating to prevent damage. The boiler will not restart automatically — you must address the underlying cause and then press the reset button to resume normal operation. Switching the boiler off and on at the mains will not clear this lockout.

Is the L1 fault code the same on every boiler?

No. L1 means different things on different brands — see the table above. Always identify your boiler's brand (it is printed on the front casing) before acting on any advice about the code.

Can I fix a L1 fault myself?

On some brands there are safe homeowner checks first — typically system pressure, the condensate pipe in cold weather, and a single reset. Where the code is a simple pressure or reset condition, that may be all it needs. Never open the boiler casing yourself.

Who should I call about a L1 fault?

For gas boilers, a Gas Safe registered engineer — it is a legal requirement for any work on the appliance. For heat pumps, an MCS or F-Gas qualified heat pump engineer. If you smell gas at any point, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999.
