What does the Firebird E4 fault code mean?
The E4 code on a Firebird oil boiler indicates a problem with the boiler's control thermistor — the temperature sensor that works alongside the temperature potentiometer and PCB to regulate how much heat the boiler produces. When this sensor gives readings outside the expected range, or stops responding altogether, the boiler logs E4 and may shut down to protect itself. Note that on some Firebird model variants, E4 can also be associated with an overheat or high-limit condition, particularly if poor circulation has caused the boiler to run too hot. Firebird's fault code display typically shows the code for around 30 seconds before clearing, unless the boiler is in diagnostic mode.

Because the thermistor signal is processed by the printed circuit board alongside the temperature potentiometer, a failing PCB can generate an E4 code even when the thermistor itself tests within its correct resistance range. This is less common but should be considered if the thermistor and wiring both check out correctly.
How to fix it
- Check there is oil in the tank and the supply valve is fully open DIY safe
Walk out to your oil tank and check the sight gauge or dip the tank if necessary. A low or empty tank is a surprisingly common reason for boiler faults, and no engineer visit can fix an empty tank. Also confirm the inline shut-off valve on the oil supply line is in the open (in-line) position.

On the boiler's front panel, find the pressure gauge. For most sealed central heating systems, the cold pressure should sit between 1.0 and 1.5 bar. If it reads below 1 bar, use the filling loop to top up the pressure slowly until it reaches approximately 1.2 bar, then close the filling loop valves.
