What does the Halstead E fault code mean?
The 'E' fault code on Halstead boilers — often displayed as 'E1' on digital-display models such as the Ace HE 24/30/35 and Eden VBX/CBX ranges, or indicated by a flashing red LED on older models like the Ace High and Finest — signals an ignition lockout. This means the boiler attempted to light the burner, failed to detect a stable flame, and shut itself down as a safety precaution. On the Ace HE range, the boiler will typically make up to five ignition attempts before locking out. Older LED-based models display the same lockout condition via a solid or flashing red safety-lockout light rather than an alphanumeric code. Either way, the boiler will not fire again until it is manually reset. Note that Halstead ceased manufacturing in 2012, so these are now ageing appliances and parts availability can be limited.

This is the most frequent reason a Halstead boiler locks out on 'E' or 'E1'.

If the fan runs and the air pressure switch lifts but the boiler still fails to light, gas may not be reaching the burner in sufficient quantity. This could mean the gas valve or its solenoid coil is failing to open properly, or that supply pressure at the meter is too low. Less commonly, the gas cock to the boiler may have been inadvertently turned off.

The air pressure switch checks that the flue fan is moving enough air before allowing ignition. A kinked or split rubber hose to the switch, a faulty diaphragm inside the switch, or a fan that is starting to struggle with age can all prevent the switch from signalling 'ready', causing a lockout before any ignition attempt begins. On Ace High models, PCB faults were frequently misdiagnosed as fan or air pressure switch problems.

If it is not sending the correct voltage to the gas valve, the ignition transformer, or the fan, the boiler will fail to light even though all physical components are in good order. PCB faults were a known issue on the Ace High range in particular and can be tricky to distinguish from other component failures without proper voltage tracing.
How to fix it
- Check that your gas supply is working DIY safe
Before anything else, confirm other gas appliances in your home (cooker, hob) are working normally. If they are not, the fault lies with your gas supply rather than the boiler — contact your gas supplier or call 0800 111 999 if you smell gas.
- Reset the boiler once or twice DIY safe
On digital-display Halstead models (Ace HE, Eden VBX/CBX), locate the reset button — usually a dedicated button on the control panel — and hold it for a few seconds until the display clears. On older LED-based models such as the Ace High, turn the main switch to the Reset position (spring return) and, if the overheat cut-out has tripped, press the small reset button on the underside-left of the casing. Allow the boiler to complete a full ignition cycle. If it locks out again within a short period, do not keep resetting — further attempts are unlikely to help and can mask a worsening fault.
