Ideal L2 Fault Code
Ignition lockout — the boiler has tried to light but failed to detect a flame, so it has locked out for safety.

What does the Ideal L2 fault code mean?
Ignition lockout — the boiler has tried to light but failed to detect a flame, so it has locked out for safety.
Common causes
- Gas supply interruption Common
No or low gas at the boiler — gas off at the meter, a prepay meter out of credit, or an isolation valve left closed after work.
- Frozen or blocked condensate pipe Common
A condensate pipe blocked by ice in cold weather can stop the boiler firing and trigger an L2 lockout.
- Faulty ignition leads or electrodes Sometimes
Worn spark electrodes or damaged ignition leads can prevent the boiler from lighting or sensing the flame.
- Faulty gas valve or PCB Rare
A failing gas valve or control board can stop reliable ignition. Usually the costliest cause to fix.
How to fix it
- Check the gas supply is on. DIY safe
Confirm other gas appliances work, the gas meter has credit, and the isolation valve under the boiler is open.
- Check the condensate pipe in cold weather. DIY safe
If the external pipe is frozen, pour warm (not boiling) water over it to clear the ice.
- Reset the boiler. DIY safe
Press and hold the reset button for a few seconds. Do not reset repeatedly — 2 or 3 attempts is enough.
- Call a Gas Safe registered engineer. Gas Safe engineer
If L2 returns, the ignition electrodes, leads, gas valve or PCB likely need inspection — gas components must only be worked on by a Gas Safe engineer.
Parts you may need
- Ignition electrode / lead kit · from £30
- Gas valve · from £140
The exact spare depends on your boiler's GC number (on the data badge). Check this against the part before buying.
Typical repair cost
Expect to pay roughly £80–£450, depending on the underlying cause.
Frequently asked questions
What does L2 mean on an Ideal boiler?
L2 is an ignition lockout — the boiler attempted to light but did not detect a flame, so it shut down for safety.
Can I reset an Ideal L2 fault?
Yes, you can try a reset after checking the gas supply and condensate pipe. If L2 keeps returning, stop resetting and call a Gas Safe engineer.
