What does the Main E128 fault code mean?

The E128 fault code on Main boilers signals a repeated flame failure lockout. The boiler monitors every ignition attempt and, after detecting 12 consecutive instances where a flame either failed to establish or was lost unexpectedly during operation, it shuts down completely and displays E128 on the panel. This behaviour is a deliberate safety mechanism — the boiler refuses to keep attempting ignition indefinitely when something is clearly preventing stable combustion. Because Main, Baxi, and Potterton boilers share the same BDR Thermea / Baxi Group control platform, E128 carries an identical meaning across all three brands. Until the underlying cause is resolved and the boiler is reset, it will remain locked out and produce no heat or hot water.

  1. Check that other gas appliances are working DIY safe

    Turn on a gas hob ring or check another gas appliance in the property. If nothing else is getting gas either, the problem lies with the gas supply rather than the boiler itself. Contact your gas supplier or check whether a neighbouring property is also affected.

  2. Confirm the boiler's gas isolation valve is fully open DIY safe

    Locate the gas isolation valve on the pipe feeding the boiler — when the slot in the valve handle is aligned with the pipe (parallel), it is open. If it is perpendicular, it has been turned off. Turn it to the open position only if you are confident it was previously open and has been accidentally knocked.

  3. Inspect and thaw a frozen condensate pipe if weather is cold DIY safe

    Find the white or grey plastic condensate pipe, usually 21–32 mm in diameter, running from the boiler to an external drain or soakaway. Feel along its length for a section that is unusually cold or has ice visible inside. Apply a warm (not boiling) water pour from a watering can, a hot water bottle, or a microwaveable heat pack to the frozen section. Once the blockage clears, reset the boiler. To prevent a repeat, consider lagging the exposed pipe with foam pipe insulation.

  4. Attempt a boiler reset — once or twice only DIY safe

    Press and hold the reset button (refer to your boiler's handbook for its exact location) until the boiler attempts to re-fire. If it fires successfully, monitor it over the next hour to check it stays running. If it locks out again with E128, do not keep resetting — repeated unsuccessful resets can cause additional wear and will not resolve an underlying mechanical or gas fault.

  5. Check for obvious flue obstructions from outside DIY safe

    Go outside and look at the flue terminal on the external wall or roof. Check for a bird nest, debris, or heavy ivy growth blocking the outlet or air intake grilles. Do not attempt to reach or dismantle any part of the flue — simply report what you observe to the engineer.
