What does the Main E270 fault code mean?
The E270 fault code on Main boilers signals a circulation fault — sometimes described as a 'dry fire' condition — where the boiler's safety system has detected insufficient water flow through the primary circuit. Without adequate water movement, the heat exchanger could overheat and sustain serious damage, so the boiler locks out completely until the problem is resolved. Because Main boilers share the same platform as Baxi (both are BDR Thermea brands), the E270 code behaves identically across both ranges. On some Main boiler variants, E270 may also be logged alongside flame-loss events, but in all cases the boiler treats it as a critical lockout requiring the underlying cause to be identified before normal operation can resume.

The printed circuit board coordinates all boiler functions. Corrosion, a damaged component, or a loose connector on the PCB can cause it to incorrectly interpret sensor readings and generate a spurious E270 lockout. This is less common but worth considering when no other cause can be found.
How to fix it
- Check the system pressure gauge DIY safe
Look at the pressure gauge on the front of the boiler. It should read between 1.0 and 1.5 bar when the system is cold. If it is below 1 bar, low pressure is the likely trigger for E270 and you can top it up yourself using the filling loop (usually a braided flexi-hose under the boiler with one or two quarter-turn valves). Open the valve(s) slowly, watch the gauge rise, and close the valve(s) once you reach about 1.2 bar. Never overfill above 1.5 bar.
- Reset the boiler DIY safe
Once pressure is within range, press and hold the reset button (usually marked with a flame or 'R' symbol) for around three seconds. The boiler should attempt to restart. If it fires up and runs normally, monitor the pressure over the next few days to check it is not dropping again — a persistent drop suggests a leak somewhere in the system.
