What does the Biasi ER03 fault code mean?
The ER03 code is Biasi's general safety lockout signal. Rather than pointing to one specific component, it tells you the boiler's PCB has detected a reading outside of safe operating limits — whether that's water pressure, gas pressure, air pressure, or a temperature sensor — and has shut the boiler down as a precaution. Because it's a catch-all code, diagnosing the root cause typically takes longer than with more specific Biasi error codes. Older Biasi models such as the Riva Plus and Garda display this as ER03, while newer Inovia and Advance Plus ranges use E-codes (e.g. E133, E110, E118), but the underlying issues and diagnostic approach are broadly the same.

If water has escaped from the system through a leak or via a radiator bleed, the pressure drops below the boiler's minimum threshold and it locks out. Check the pressure gauge — it should sit at around 1.0–1.5 bar when the system is cold. A reading below 1.0 bar is a strong pointer to this cause.
- Frozen or blocked condensate pipe Common
The condensate pipe is the external plastic waste pipe (usually 21.5 mm or 32 mm diameter) that discharges acidic condensate to a drain. In sub-zero temperatures it can freeze solid, causing the boiler to back up and lock out. This is especially common during cold snaps and is one of the few ER03 causes a homeowner can safely resolve themselves.
- Fan or air pressure switch fault Common
The fan expels combustion gases safely through the flue, and the air pressure switch confirms it is spinning at the correct speed before allowing ignition. If the fan is worn, obstructed, or the pressure switch diaphragm has failed, the PCB will refuse to fire the burner and lock out with ER03.
- Circulation pump failure or partial blockage Sometimes
The pump pushes heated water around the central heating circuit and through the heat exchanger. If it is seized, running slowly, or partially blocked by sludge, flow rates drop and the boiler may overheat or lose the temperature differential it expects, triggering a lockout.
- Central heating sludge causing flow restriction Sometimes
A build-up of magnetite sludge and scale inside radiators or pipework reduces water flow, which can cause the boiler to overheat or fail to reach the expected flow temperature. Cold spots at the bottom of radiators are a tell-tale sign.
- PCB fault Rare
If a Gas Safe engineer works through every other component and finds nothing wrong, the PCB itself may be sending or misreading signals. This is a diagnosis of exclusion and is relatively uncommon compared with pressure or fan issues.
How to fix it
- Reset the boiler — but no more than twice DIY safe
Locate the reset button on the boiler's control panel and hold it for approximately 5 seconds until the boiler attempts to restart. If the fault clears and the boiler runs normally, monitor it over the next few hours. If ER03 returns, do not keep resetting — repeated failed starts can allow unburned gas to accumulate in the combustion chamber.
- Check the system pressure gauge DIY safe
Look for the pressure gauge on or just below the boiler's display panel. The needle should sit between 1.0 and 1.5 bar when the system is cold. If it reads below 1.0 bar, top up the system using the filling loop (a braided hose with one or two valves, usually beneath the boiler). Open the valve(s) slowly, watch the gauge, and stop when the needle reaches around 1.2–1.3 bar. Close the valve(s) fully, then reset the boiler. If pressure keeps dropping, there is a leak that needs a Gas Safe engineer.
- Check for a frozen condensate pipe (winter months only) DIY safe
In freezing weather, go outside and locate the white or grey plastic pipe that exits through an external wall, usually near the boiler. If it feels solid or you can see ice, wrap it with a warm (not boiling) hot water bottle or pour lukewarm water along its length to thaw it gradually. Once thawed, reset the boiler. Consider lagging the pipe afterwards to prevent a recurrence.
- Check that your gas supply is working DIY safe
Confirm other gas appliances in the property — such as a gas hob or fire — are operating normally. If they are not, contact your gas supplier; the issue may be with the supply rather than the boiler. Do not attempt to inspect or adjust any gas pipework or the gas valve yourself.
