2 Boiler Fault Code: What It Means on Every Brand

The 2 fault code appears on 4 brands — Halstead, Intergas, Johnson & Starley and Nibe — and it does not mean the same thing on each. The same two or three characters can signal a pressure problem on one boiler and an ignition fault on another, so identify your brand first and use the table below to jump to the right page.

Halstead 2

Fault Code 2 on Halstead boilers that display numbered error codes signals an ignition lockout — the boiler has attempted to light (up to five times) and failed to establish or maintain a stable flame. The display of a '2' tells you the burner either never produced a detectable flame signal during start-up, or lost the flame signal shortly after igniting. Until the underlying cause is addressed and the boiler is reset, it will remain locked out and produce no heating or hot water. Note that Halstead left the UK market in 2012, so all affected boilers are now well over a decade old — parts availability can be limited, and a repair-versus-replace conversation with your engineer is worthwhile.

Intergas 2

Intergas fault code 2 appears when the boiler's control board detects that the two water temperature sensors — S1 (flow) and S2 (return) — are giving readings that don't match their expected positions. The S1 sensor sits at the top of the heat exchanger and monitors the temperature of water leaving the boiler, while S2 sits at the bottom and tracks the temperature of water returning from your radiators. When the PCB sees the return temperature reading higher than the flow temperature, or otherwise detects that the sensors appear to be the wrong way around, it raises fault code 2 and locks the boiler out as a safety precaution. This is almost always caused by the sensors being physically or electrically transposed, though wiring faults or a failed sensor can produce the same symptom.

Johnson & Starley 2

Fault Code 2 (shown as 'Display 2' on the LCD/LED panel) appears on Johnson & Starley Economaire warm air heaters when the air pressure switch fails to release from its closed position at the point in the start-up sequence when it should be open. In normal operation the combustion air fan (CAF) generates a pressure differential that the air pressure switch monitors; the switch must be in the correct state before the PCB will allow the ignition sequence to proceed. When the switch remains closed unexpectedly – whether due to contaminated tubes, a faulty switch, or a fan problem – the appliance shuts down safely and displays this code. This code is specific to the Economaire warm air heater range; Johnson & Starley's QuanTec and Reno combi/system boilers use a different fault-code scheme.

Nibe 2

Alarm code 2 on Nibe heat pumps indicates that the BT2 sensor — which monitors the temperature of water returning from the heating circuit back into the heat pump — is either disconnected or has failed. Without a valid reading from this sensor, the unit cannot safely manage heating output, so both the main heating function and any supplementary electric backup heating are blocked until the fault is resolved.

Can I fix a 2 fault myself?

Not usually. On every brand listed, 2 points to a fault that needs a suitably registered engineer to diagnose and repair. A single reset to rule out a transient glitch is reasonable; repeated resets are not.
