Viessmann FD Fault Code: Causes, Fixes & Repair Costs

What does the Viessmann FD fault code mean?

The FD fault code on a Viessmann boiler means the boiler attempted to light but failed to detect a stable flame — or lost the flame signal during normal operation. As a safety measure, the boiler locks itself out to prevent unburnt gas from accumulating. This is a deliberate and important safety feature. The code is common across the Viessmann Vitodens range (including the Vitodens 100-W, 111-W, and 200-W) and should not be bypassed or repeatedly reset without investigating the root cause.

General guidance only — not a substitute for professional advice, and not certified by a Gas Safe engineer. Always have your specific appliance assessed by a qualified professional. Any gas work must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If you smell gas or suspect carbon monoxide, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999.

Common causes

How to fix it

  1. Check that your gas supply is working DIY safe

Go to your gas meter and confirm the isolation valve (the handle should be in line with the pipe, not across it). Then test another gas appliance — if your gas hob or gas fire also fails to light, the problem is with the supply rather than the boiler. Contact your gas supplier (e.g. Cadent, SGN, or Wales & West Utilities) immediately and do not attempt to reset the boiler.

  2. Inspect and, if necessary, thaw the condensate pipe DIY safe

Find the condensate discharge pipe — typically a white or grey 21.5 mm plastic pipe running from the boiler to an external drain or internal soil stack. If it is winter and any portion of the pipe runs outside, feel along it for a solid frozen section. Carefully pour warm (not boiling) water over the frozen area until it flows freely, then reset the boiler once. If the pipe is not frozen but appears blocked, contact an engineer.

  3. Check the boiler's system pressure DIY safe

Look at the pressure gauge on the boiler (or the digital display on some Vitodens models). For most Viessmann boilers the operating pressure should sit between 1.0 and 1.5 bar when cold. If it reads below 1.0 bar, use the filling loop to slowly top up the system until the gauge reaches approximately 1.2 bar, then close the filling loop valve fully. A low-pressure condition can contribute to ignition problems.

  4. Attempt a single boiler reset DIY safe

Press and hold the reset button on the boiler's control panel (on most Vitodens models this is marked with a flame symbol or 'Reset'). Wait for the boiler to run through its ignition sequence. If the FD fault returns immediately, do not reset it again — repeated resets with a genuine fault can allow unburnt gas to accumulate and are not safe. Move on to calling an engineer.

  5. Have a Gas Safe engineer inspect and clean the flame sensor and ignition components Gas Safe engineer

An engineer will remove the burner assembly to access the ionisation electrode and ignition electrodes, clean away any carbon deposits, check the electrode gaps and alignment, and test the ignition lead for continuity. These tasks require opening the boiler casing and working near the gas circuit — they must not be attempted by anyone who is not Gas Safe registered.

  6. Have a Gas Safe engineer test gas pressure and inspect the gas valve Gas Safe engineer

Using calibrated test equipment, the engineer will measure the gas inlet pressure and working pressure at the boiler. If the pressure is outside the manufacturer's specified range, they will liaise with the gas network or adjust the valve as permitted. A faulty gas valve will be replaced at this stage if required.

  7. Have a Gas Safe engineer assess the PCB and burner control unit if all other checks pass Gas Safe engineer

If the flame sensor, electrodes, ignition lead, and gas supply are all confirmed to be in good order, the engineer will test the PCB and burner control module. These components are diagnosed using specialist equipment and, if faulty, will need to be replaced with Viessmann-approved parts to preserve any remaining warranty.

  8. Call a Gas Safe registered engineer if the fault persists after your own basic checks Gas Safe engineer

If checking the gas supply, condensate pipe, system pressure, and a single reset have not cleared the FD code, book a Gas Safe registered engineer. You can verify any engineer's credentials at gassaferegister.co.uk. Do not open the boiler casing or attempt any internal repairs yourself.

Parts you may need

The exact spare depends on your boiler's GC number (on the data badge). Check this against the part before buying.

Typical repair cost

Expect to pay roughly £100–£380, depending on the underlying cause.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep resetting my Viessmann boiler when the FD code appears?

You should limit yourself to one reset after carrying out the basic homeowner checks (gas supply, condensate pipe, system pressure). If the FD code comes back straight away, stop resetting. Every failed ignition attempt can release a small amount of unburnt gas before the lockout kicks in, so repeated resets without fixing the underlying problem is not safe. Call a Gas Safe engineer instead.

How much does it typically cost to fix a Viessmann FD fault in the UK?

For the most common repairs — cleaning or replacing the ionisation electrode, ignition electrodes, or ignition lead — most homeowners pay between £100 and £250 including labour. If the gas valve needs replacing, expect to pay towards £300–£380. A PCB replacement is less common for this fault but can cost £400–£550 all in; this is best discussed with your engineer before authorising the work, as on an older boiler a replacement boiler may be more cost-effective.

Does the FD fault code mean my Viessmann boiler needs replacing?

Not usually. In the majority of cases the FD fault is caused by a serviceable component — a dirty flame sensor, worn ignition electrodes, or a faulty ignition lead — that can be replaced at modest cost. Replacement becomes worth considering if the boiler is over 12–15 years old and multiple components are failing simultaneously, or if the repair estimate approaches half the cost of a new boiler installation.

Will my Viessmann warranty cover the FD fault repair?

Viessmann typically offers a five-year warranty on boilers registered within 30 days of installation by an approved installer, though extended warranties are available. However, the warranty usually requires that the boiler is serviced annually by a qualified engineer. If you have missed services, your warranty cover may be reduced or void. Check your warranty documentation or contact Viessmann directly before commissioning a repair, as an approved engineer may need to carry out the work for any claim to be accepted.
